I found this button at a camp that the 34 Indiana was at and there was a Robert Jackson in the 34th. The button has R Jackson and IND on it. I’m not sure if the button is civil war era or not. But everything else I found there was civil war. Any and all help would be appreciated.

It wouldn't be usual for individuals to have their own name represented on a button in that way, except as a business name (for a button manufacturer, clothier, or for a company uniform).

There was a "R.Jackson" listed as a "merchant tailor" in Indiana trade directories (based in Lafayette in 1860) so that's one possibility... but it's a relatively common name, so may not be the only possibility.

I was thinking the same about it would be unusual for them to have their own name on it. Thanks for the merchant name. Where do you find the list of directories? Thank you very much for the info. That is a very good possibility.

I have a large accumulation of them, collected over the years. Whenever I come across one on the web, I try to save it as a pdf text file so I can search it. My experience is that saving links to the documents on the web isn't a good strategy because people re-organise their websites from time to time and the link is then broken.
