I was walking through the woods this morning when my ears were blown off by this piece of sheet brass. I thought it could potentially be a plate, due to its size and relatively rectangular shape. I know this looks awfully crude, but I’ve seen a few in the past that aren’t quite perfectly square.some have been more crude than others. What do you guys think? I’m honestly on the fence as to whether this is a plate or not. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Very interesting... I must say, I'm on the fence as well. The corners on the 'straight edge' appear to be clipped. The other edge seems broken. It is very thin... All that said, some pre-CW Virginia militia used a clipped corner, rectangular belt plate. But I can't see any solder marks for the hook.

Maybe others will chime in. BTW, your pictures are excellent.

Thanks DCMatt! This one has puzzled me for a while too. The lack of solder marks had stumped me, but the relative shape has me confused as to any other item this could be. Who knows, maybe somebody else has seen something similar. I'm learning from this site all the time.

I don't think so based on what Matt said, it is overly thin, and no solder marks. It does have an older patina though

Yeah, I think I'm in agreeance with y'all. That green patina will look awesome in my display, though! I could use it as a backdrop for some of my older buttons. Thanks everybody for the replies!
