I found this along a branch in Kentucky. The branch is about 20 steps from where I have found a few broken flint pieces, so it got me wondering whether or not any work was being done along the stream. It is a bit elongated but extremely smooth to the touch all the way around.

yes but do the ends show excessive wear from striking so as to be very different from the rest of the rock?

I don’t see any evidence of battering or wear on it. If it were me, I’d prolly pick it up and examine it, then leaverite where I found it.

In my humble opinion, I am going to say no. It looks like many cobblestones in the picture where you found it, which I assume is a creek bed or former creek or riverbed. No wear on either end as noted and the surrounding family of cobblestones identifies this as simply a cobblestone. Nice shape.

I agree with the others, when the photos are blown up to a look at the surface better, i see no evidence of being used as a hammerstone.

When we were at our cabin a Nolin Lake in KY, the lake and creeks are littered with stones similar to what appears in your first photo. The are is an active karst zone. In some areas the limestone has a sandstone cap preventing the water from percolating into the limestone, and in others no cap exists.

I would have inspected it too, but not sure if I would have kept it.

I do not see any signs of being used as a hammer stone.
