A buddy and I got out to a new site that he has dug civil war bullets and buttons-there was a period fort during the day so that would explain the civil war relics.

Last Saturday I dug a crotal bell that locked on my XP Deus 93/94 using Deus Fast with high frequency coil which shows a number 2 on the bottom of the bell. I also dug a round brass disc which I thought was a cow tag, but some diggers feel it is a mining/coal tag; where I live in N. Virginia there are no mines around so it is a surprise as to how/why I recovered this.

My question: Are there any mining/coal tag experts out there that can date this and from what mine this came from? Thanks Merry Christmas 🎄 all and Happy Digging!

Your question will have big answers from someone with deep knowledge.
In my case I have a similar tag from Morgan County Alabama. Trouble is the northern half of Alabama was iron, coal and stone mining so it is a tough history to unravel.
Coal was the most widespread pursuit here maybe. There was some mines about a third of a mile from my house and the date was 1850. Best alabama11.
