another quack medicine from the late 1800s . Starkey and Palen's Oxygen Water. Surprised to find it not broken in the trash pit.

interestingly, it has a stain on the inside where the "solution" sat half used leaving a telltale horizontal ring at the half way mark. The same volume of "solution" left a second ring stain when it was thrown in the pit lying now on its side. That ring stain is vertical....but same volume of solution. So it looks like the consumer of this one realized the quackery about half way through its usage....

It’s astonishing what folks were tricked into buying in those days. Despite being exposed as “bosh” and “pretentious nonsense” in medical journals of the day, Starkey and Palen continued to claim that their product contained “magnetized oxygen” combined with nitrogen in a form that enriched the oxygen concentration beyond that found in the atmosphere.

In fact it was a solution of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) with some potassium chlorate and a bit of ferric carbonate to give it a more interesting colour.

This stuff wasn’t for drinking though, It was an “inhaling fluid” to be used with a proprietary inhaler like this:



The price for “office treatment” was $30 per month, payable in advance, calling for “thirty treatments, whether in as many consecutive days or otherwise.” For “home treatment”, the price was $15 plus shipping for two months' supply with inhaling apparatus, and “full and explicit directions for use.”

I understand what you are saying. Cleaning it would wash away the history.
