I remember reading as a kid how Lauri Rapala came up with the original design. He claimed he had rowed out in his wooden boat and observed how the fish would catch any injured minnows more easily than the healthy ones. That's what he wanted to replicate.

Years ago we went pike fishing upstate.
When we got to the cottage I showed the owner the lure that I wanted to use.
The lure was given to me to try from a collector and when he saw it he offered our stay free in exchange
The following morning my wife’s reel started screaming and the pike was so so large that I quickly tried netting it and the fish snapped the line and Good bye lure
True story
