I’ve been expanding some old sites in 2 of my neighborhood park woods over the last few hunts. Typical mix of early and more modern finds.

Highlights:
-probably my best V Nickel, pic with group of coins found in this hunt show a another V that was found this week but typical smoothie
-ramrod end, this piece is mostly solid brass with some wood shaft and iron pin remnants still in place, What’s It group thoughts are ramrod end for Fowler or shotgun, not round ball or 3 ringer type
-silver ring has a makers mark that looks Mexican or Native, not super old since 925, but if anyone recognizes let me know
Thx

That's a nice little haul.

This will be the mark on your ring (JOY MEX PLATA 0925), and it is a Mexican mark for sterling silver:

Joy.jpg

“Plata” in Spanish simply means “Silver” and “Joy Mex” will be an abbreviation for “Joyeria (or Joyas) Mexico”, indicating it’s Mexican-made jewellery. It’s a generic workshop mark (probably in Taxco), not attributable to a specific maker, commonly used for jewellery sold by wholesalers.

Marks like this are from the first part of the 20th Century and usually before 1948 when the Mexican government began promoting the reintroduction of the "eagle mark" with a number to identify the actual manufacturers of silver items. I would think yours is 1930s-1940s or thereabouts.

You're welcome... but it helps if you provide all the marks. So, what I initially said now needs correction. The additional mark is an “eagle mark”, which Mexico introduced from 1948 onwards. There were two styles, as shown below:

Eagle.jpg

The one on the left was in use until about 1955, when it was replaced by the one on the right. The number on the eagle’s breast can be either the city of assay or an individual maker (eg #1 was for Mexico City). However the system was widely disrespected and chaotically controlled, with numbers often unofficially shared between manufacturers/locations such that there is no completely reliable definitive list. Yours is in the second style with the #4 on the breast. I don’t know what that means (nor what the larger ‘7’ is for) but the Eagle mark is not for Taxco (which was #3). I have seen #4 on jewellery also having a ‘GUA’ mark for Guadalajara, so that would be my guess.

The system was deemed to be not fit for purpose and abandoned in 1979, so your ring dates between c1955-1979
