Hello everyone, about twice a year some friend and I go one a four day detecting trip, recently this trip happened and I would say it was a big success. One friend and I started off at a cellar hole and he scored a nice shoe buckle and also a beautiful fugio cent! I found a toasted fugio and another copper, but my best find was a 1785 nova consetellatio, haven’t found one in about six years. My friend also got a batwing buckle. Good start so far. Then we went on our trip trying a few fields as we went, not a whole lot, a few coppers here and there, and then in a random field by other friend scored a solid brass shoe buckle with all brass inner pieces. Anyway we got to the best site which saw a lot of activity during several wars and the finds proved. We ended up getting 31 marked buttons! There was a hot spot where most of the buttons were coming from, I moved away a bit and scored a royal artillery button and a little further from that an American 1812 era 1st regiment of artillery button. Also found at the site was a fragment of a Brown Bess bayonet and I discovered an exploded fragment. I couldn’t believe how many buttons were popping out. The site had been hit it seemed judging from the lack of large brass items, but still very pleased with the rev war and post rev war buttons!

Awesome! Most of us are just happy with finding one Rev War button. That is a Banner hunt. My vote is in.

Thanks again all, yeah I really love these early sites with cool military stuff. For some the buttons are less exciting than a 20th century silver, but just the history behind them fascinated me. I am glad you all appreciate the finds. :)

This is my very first post/comment/reply...awesome day! I recently had a sight where between 3 of over 300 buttons were found including some nice 1820s 30s era military. A Republican Blues, Chatham artillery, eagle A, eagle R, SC militia, 1812 Artillery button, reales, large cents, seated liberties. Those plentiful sights are hard to come by especially outside the Savannah area. Awesome finds!

Wow! That’s a Killer site! Not easy to find those kinds of places. One of my best was 100 pre civil war coins from one are with about 30+ silvers or so. Finding military stuff from encampments and such is great too! These finds came from the spot of an old fortification. Our buddy who has found numerous civil war plates came up and joined us for the hunt. Sounds like you got some great civil war finds!
