Finally the soil was dry enough not to stick on our boots & spade. Perfect conditions; dry on top wet underneath. This helped us to do our longest hunt in a while - 5.5 hrs.
We are still doing a large area grid & finally it paid off as I hoped it would. We would have been happy with the hammered Lizzy but I also got the Celtic Silver by pinching it off Cru'dad's run.
We are finally entering no-mans land (previously not gridded)
We are planning 2 more outings & then we will move to Fan's Roman Site in February.

9 Scrappies - a surprise being so far from the Site!
5 broken 1st C AD Iron Age/Roman Brooches - one odd Hod Hill Variant
1 & a Half Roman Nail Cleaners
Lead Tudor Button
1575 Lizzy Threehalfpence
Very Rare Celitic Silver Unit of Tasciovanus's first coinage of 25-20 BC
(Great condition):headbang:

That’s an old silver find even by Brit standards. Fabulous find and deserves a banner

We only expected about 2-3 scrappies, as we are over 400 metres from the Main Site.
I did hope for a Celtic coin of some type because we are on the edge of a Crop-mark that I think is Iron Age. We are also filling in ground between 2 bigger Iron Age areas.
However, you can never expect a Celtic Coin, as they are so rare, but we have now covered too many acres to guess. But a massive area. (this is why we succeeded)

I think the word rarity is sometimes lost in translation across the Atlantic. I think many see everything you dig as old and fail to understand the significance in some pieces, such as that Celtic unit.

Maybe, we make it look a little commonplace, but this coin was 'Very Rare' in Van Arsdell's 1989 book & was still Very Rare in the 2010 ABC Book, so detecting hadn't moved it on in 21 years. Hard to guess what movement we have had in the last 11 years without a bit more research.

best of the best! Would you call that a "silver stater" or does it even go by a specific name? Is it the size of a gold quarter stater? That horse is fantastic! Now go out and find a Henry III gold!!!!
