Hello friends, my forte is garage sales, but recently have ventured into storage units. I won a storage unit a few days ago. This would be my 6th. They all have been disasters, except last week's when I found a 37g 14k necklace. On Fri I won another one. The pictures showed nothing as the door "was jammed", and would not go up. It was only opened about 2 feet. It was a 10x15. Needless to say, it was a complete disaster. Old crappy clothes, housewares, shoes, dilapidated mattresses, useless junk....and yes, lots and lots of rat poop! It was a nightmare, but with the help of a friend, I manged to cleaned it up like new for the facility. I had to do 3 trips to the landfill in a 15 foot uhaul truck at $1.19 per mile. I'm starting to think that this was all a set up by the facility. They knew what they had in store for them, and needed a pawn! It was a costly unit not only in money, but time and effort. I learned my lesson. Has anybody had similar experiences? What has been your worst facility?

I've never given much thought of throwing money down on this type of enterprise, but I'm thinking there ways to improve your results through experience and seeking advice from those who've been successful at it. I'd say if you find yourself again roped into a bum deal like you just described, you might just play it safe with the estate and garage sale routine, which you seem to do pretty well at.

Thank you for the advice, I appreciate it. The summer has been challenging here in Central, Fla for garage sales, so for fun and the experience, I've bid on some local auctions. All the best.

Yeah I guess if you need to expand it's probably worth the risk. Me I'm gonna stick with the small potatoes.

I one time worked for a storage facility and cleaned out units.
They had me pack junk from abandoned unlocked units into one unit that they added to the next sale.
What is common is two types of units.
Units where the unit renters knowing they planned to abandon the unit removed anything valuable and left only the junk they had already replaced or broken items.
The other type of units are the units where the person storing there died and the family knew what was in the locker and had already cleaned out anything that was valuable but did not want to spend the time to haul away the junk left over. i did for a time buy storage units but will NOT BUY UNITS BASED ON PICTURES. So i no longer do them. one time i bought 3 units and went across the street to another facility and rented a unit.
i took all the trash from the units i won and took it across the street and filled that unit. And it was cheaper at one month rent then making about 20 trips to the dump about 25 miles away. one time i abandoned a unit and as a parting gift i use industrial glue and glued a old junk safe down to the floor. this was the same storage facility that i had packed units for and had cheated me on pay.
