Today we decided to return to a Site that we left incomplete. I've been wanting to return for awhile as this area has turned up some of the hardest to find coins; Sceats. It's rare that you can target these, but I felt if we finished this area we would have a fair chance. Thankfully I was right & Cru'dad got one on his first run - job done. After completing this area, we went to the next field to pick up a few more Roman Coins from the Roman area.

4 Hours;

18th C Nut-Cracker
17th C Button
Leather Mount
Saxon Hair Pin
8 Roman Coins
Saxon Sceat - Circa AD725, Series O, Type 38. (Not had this type, I think it's pretty rare but I'll find out after Recording it)

WOW!
That is a different type, congratulations.

Interesting design on the sceat. Anyone in particular or just regional design influence?

They don't really know. The legends are often blundered runes.

UPDATE:

''EMC now has records of 31 coins of Series O (Type 38), which was a coinage of south-eastern England in the Secondary phase of the 'sceat' coinage, c.710-750.''

Great find Crusader, different that what I have found here. Very nice. Also glad to see you and your father still are detecting, must be totally perfect to have such a father. Other fathers would ask, what are you doing with your time ( wasting it....). You have a great one, pity that I did not get to met him. But great stuff, as always! Greetings to you and your father! Earl

That Sceat is magnificent. Congratulations.
They're high on my bucket list but extremely rare in this parts of the country. I live in an area that was a debatable land. During the heptarchy the area changed hands between the Mercians and Northumbrians so you could say I might come by either I suppose but I'm not holding my breath.
And looking at the Spinks book of English coins those Northumbrian Sceats are miniscule in size. I'd imagine even if i was lucky enough to pass over one it would come up on the kind of low numbers I tend to not bother even digging.
Fingers crossed though.
