Talk about a ride! I found my first seated quarter today and not 20 feet away I found a seated half. Both are holed making me believe they might have been on a string when lost.

The half is an 1859-O and the quarter is an 1877- S
So far all I have done is run them under some running water. Any way I can clean them without killing the value?
Great finds! I soaked my recent Seated Quarter in distilled water for a couple hours, then gently wiped it with a wet cotton ball after most of the dirt had come off. I don’t think I scratched mine or hurt the value, but I am no expert. Maybe others will have tips. Congrats!

Congrats on the two silvers.
Don't get too uptight about the value/cleaning issue.
Both are holed so that pretty well threw the value down the hole.
Unless they're a key date.

Good to know. Maybe the tin foil and baking soda I hot water trick? It does great on silver rings.

Here’s my post on how to clean blackened silver coins in the cleaning and preservation section of the forum.

There are detailed instructions in that post, as well as numerous before and after photos for the galvanic coupling method of cleaning silver coins.

Cheers, Buck

Wow! Two coins that I have never found in all my years. I wouldn't worry too much about the value. Besides being holed, both look to have a lot of surface scratches.

Yes I think they have been turned and possibly hit a few times by a plow or two. I am going to clean them this evening using the hot water and tin foil method.
