Found these today in a small cluster buried near some scattered foundation stones. Associated nails are rose and not cut.

The 68 tag looks like a livestock ID to me. Seems as though it was repurposed as a drill backing.

Quite possibly and I gave that thought. Didn't find them spread out in a line or with any others. Could have been sitting in a shed or barn that has long since vanished. And it's the first time I've encountered them although I've seen plenty of old standard heavy smooth non-barbed wire and staples. This area was farmed late 1600's through mid-1900s. The heyday for horse and cows here was post Civil War.

Wire guide spikes / drive hooks. ?

I think these were even used to hold ground wires to poles and such... even telephone poles... but not sure on this... they seem really familiar.

I have seen those hook nails in fence lines. Have also seen them holding old telephone wiring up in attics those weren't pounded in tight though.
