They did it with Colonial Coppers, Large & Half Cents But not sure if they did it in the second half of the
1800's with anything.

They used to Skim Gold off of Gold Coins also
(Where the word "Skimming" came from I think)
the reason they started reeding the edges.

Interesting that the dime is cut in the way that it is. Not like a piece of eight for the center of the dime is still totally there. Perhaps someone needed some silver for something and filed off some cause i really can't see any cut marks or edge bending from cutting.

Also interesting how the obverse figure remaining is fairly centered so maybe this coin was used in a display of some kind (like a jewelry box) and was pushed into a small groove in thin wood and the date area was removed from the coin so it would not show when lifting the cover.

Maybe that would make it a "Piece of Ten"

Nice find regardless

I looked at it with my loupe .It is a nice neat cut there is a little angle on the inside of the cut .The coin lays perfectly flat though .It may have even been filed after being cut .
