That information details precisely why detectorist can't trust the VDI/tone returns on their machines when chasing gold jewelry. They should take note of the different amounts of the various alloys/metals that are combined with gold, the machine then seeing each piece as it's own unique metal and using that information to help generate returns. For this reason, and others, gold jewelry can offer the detectorist a wide range of returns. Since gold jewelry offers no consistency in it's makeup there can likewise be no way of consistently measuring it, despite all of the claims to the contrary. Coins, per example, are produced with consistency in their size and metal contents so tones/VDI can likewise produce returns with that same consistency. But this just isn't a possibility with gold jewelry.

I'm sidelined too. Getting a few things I don't need on Ebay, chasing cats, feeding chickens, not detecting then not till August 1.

However, I'm going through my stuff and getting rid of a bunch of stuff I don't want, re labeling stuff, going through dresser drawers that have useless stuff in it and going to post some of the finds from this spring I haven't had time to do yet.

Thanks for sharing Mr Casper,

Interesting the 18k white gold has 25% Palladium / 75% Gold, which would mean the ring should have more melt value then a 24k ring of the same weight. Palladium price being more then gold.

Hoping your health improves and your able to get back out, soon.

Interesting article, thanks. I hope you and Smokey get cleared hot soon!!
