I have dug up what appears to be a U.S. military button. I am still letting it soak to remove the loose dirt (hence no pic), but a this point, I can say:
- It was found in Palo Alto, CA
- It has a diameter slightly larger than a quarter (still too much encrustation to measure exactly)
- It appears to be made of brass or a brass jacket covering another metal
- on the face is an eagle with words above each wing (I can make out pluribus over the left wing)
- above the eagle is a raised circle with stars
- on the reverse are the words .......Swann Philadelphia

Any help to point me in right direction (websites, etc.) would be appreciated.

Thanks a lot!

The relicman website, above, is the best for the ID of Civil War buttons, this sounds to be a post Civil War button but hard to tell with out photos

I think your "swann Philadelphia" is actually

HORSTMANN / PHILADELPHIA (1893 - 1935), a Horstmann Company.

Also, I do believe you have found a U.S. Army "Great Seal" Button is service from 1902 to present. If this be true then your button is dated, based on the back mark, between 1902 and 1935.

Generally, most those sites listed above will not help. Try this one...

Welcome to TreasureNet! While I'm sure the original poster of this thread has disappeared you want to start a new thread with "livery button" in the title, as I believe that is what you have, rather than military. And include what text you can read of the back (or show a picture).
