Solid Copper Ball?

Hey all, just going through some old finds in this long winter and this still has me stumped. It was found in an old abandoned railroad stop town that had about 300 people in the 1920s but is just a single bar now. It weighs about 650 grams and appears to be solid copper with flat spots on the top and bottom, also has a ring around one side

you may be right, I have taken apart valves where somehow the ball starts seating in the same position over and over(maybe shape from how it wore?) and leaves a ring on it like that. though that would be a pretty large check valve at around 2.5 inches if im reading scale right

I think you're right . If it stayed in one spot it would wear a grove. I've worked on antique pumps and steam checks that had large checkballs. Brass was used to prevent rust.

ahh i see now, prob not a check valve ball then, no specific wear that i can tell either that would lend a hint to its use

Maybe it was soldered to something at one time and all remnants have worn off, or, it was in a fire where all the solder melted off? Top of a bed post, door knob, cane topper, etc......

Forget copper...mine are made of STEEL!

Aside from that, I have seen these, that is brass, and the ring on the ball fits into a washer with a spring, part of a blowoff valve...

Yes, you should definitely try to make sure your wife doesn't take possession your balls. She obviously thinks they aren't valuable. But it might be your fault if you showed her your balls while saying, "Take a look at my junk!"
