I hit 3 major sites for some Spring hunting and did pretty well. Sites I've hunted countless times in the past but they still give up great relics.

First photo is a group shot. Top right corner is a frizzen. Eyeballed it on the surface. Round disc in the middle is a 17?? half cent. Pretty toasted

Kitty corner to the frizzen is a small piece of trade silver. Below the half cent is a brass point and pewter spoon.

Second photo is of a pair twin buckles. Both from site #3.

But the icing on the cake was finding the 17th century "L Heart" trade ring.

A bit of reading I learned 3 Jesuit missionaries were sent into the Mohawk valley in 1667 and visited the Oneidas and Mohawks. Further reading puts the Jesuit missionaries in the Mohawk valley as early as 1642.

I particularly like this ring due to it's history and background.

I did find an identical ring on a website " This week in Pennsylvania Archaeology " This Week In Pennsylvania Archaeology: Symbols of Love

Also that the "L-Heart" series pertains to that the symbol "L" stood for King Louis the 14th of France and the "Heart"
was his love for his subjects of "New France" .It was more or less a campaign logo.

A great find !

Thanks for looking and HH !

D.

Great ring. Made the same way as many of the IHS Jesuit ones. That's something I'd like to see show up at our early French sites.

Surprised you haven't unearthed such a ring yet.
The 17th century trade rings are very different from the 18th century styles.

Years ago someone I was hunting with dug one, but I know so little about them at the time that the image of it didn't stay in my brain. But other than that, nothing, and I have spent a lot of time on the French sites.

I would think many of those early style of rings made their way into the 18th century as well. Sure would be great to dig a silver one huh.

I read that the missionaries got as far as the Mississippi valley but started out in Quebec and Montreal. What blows my mind is that they got so far into the midwest.

'^*^Dig and they will come ^*^'

I certainly will, but that age of site is getting very hard to find here. We're pretty much left with the ones we've already hunted and as you an imagine they're getting fairly quiet.
