I noticed this was your very first post - so, Welcome Aboard SnowHunter42! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forum: Select Your Area.... for information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country).

it's always best to put something in the pic to show the scale. A known object such as a coin works well. With a threaded post and what looks to be a convex backing behind the eagle, it should be a US Army visor hat insignia. Like Terry said, probably Vietnam era

I agree with Pistol Pete, looks like the cap insignia used on Class A dress uniform, quite possibly from the 60s or 70s
