Hi Folks, I went out today to enjoy this beautiful weather we are having in northern Ca today to search for my gold coin that I still know is out there:laughing7:. I went to my friends 200 acres that has had some gold rush activity (there is a cemetery that dates to 1852 boardering his property). I ended up finding a bunch of square nails and a copper spoon with some Fancy on it. Not sure when copper spoons were used but I assume it is very old at least for Ca.. When did they use copper spoons?:icon_scratch:

Then towards the end of the day I thought I was going to be digging a Indian finally. I got a solid 12-34 on the CTX. I popped the plug and found a small square nail in one side of the hole then this extremely thin broken piece of what appears to be silver. If it is a Spanish is it extremely worn and has nothing on it that I can see. One time I thought I saw a A or a V but maybe it was my eyes wishing it is a Spanish. I would show you the other side but it is equally as smooth. What do you folks think? Possible?

On a side not I found my 1811 5 frances as the crow flys about .5 miles from here as well as a few Chinese cash coins..

I really dig the old ornate spoon. I dig a lot of silver plated brass spoons in my area. Not sure I have even heard of a copper spoon? As the little silver find goes. You may never get an ID but, you can determine if it's silver I reckon. May your gold coin soon come into proper alignment directly beneath your coil.:icon_thumright:

I did dig a silver plated spoon from the 20's last weekend on this property. this one seems older :) I got the rotten egg smell with some spit and aluminum foil. I will never know for sure on the Spanish though :( And thanks for the gold coin wishes!!

Cool styling on that spoon and I think you have a piece of a one real there. Congrats!
Thanks Mike!

That certainly has the look of an early piece of silver. Nice find regardless of the unknown ID.

Congrats on getting out.
The spoon I believe was plated at one time but the ground corrosion ate away at the plating. Is anything printed on the back part of the handle??

It’s plausible being nice thin silver with no rim -

might be silver. But doesn't look like a cut coin to me, for some reason.

It is silver, it gave the wrotten egg smell with foil. And the spoon I can't get any writing off of it, too toasty and was bent in the area where you would normally see anything. No sign of plating although it could have been possible. Kind of a inconclusive hunt but I am on to another old sight for Ca for sure. Hopefully I can pull some more old stuff out of here soon instead of just square nails, bent spoons, and little thin chunks of silver. Have a great day all!!

Looks to me like a cut one real that had a corner broken off. Well done.
