This might be a find of a lifetime for me because of where I found it, but in order not to appear biased towards what it is, I just want to make sure of what it is before I tell y'all where I found it and my thoughts on it.

I am 90% sure this is a Civil War era Springfield musket barrel and butt plate. The barrel is 40 in. Long and is .58 Cal. Tomorrow we are going back to the site where we found it to find the rest of it. We had to cut the search shirt because the gun was in a hornets nest. We're killing the hornets tomorrow. 😁

Awesome find! Sure does look to be a Model 1861 Springfield, well parts of one that is!

Can we do a "Banner" on the "What Is It" forum?.....If so I'd say this would count as one in my book.

That's a great looking recovery Rusty, best of luck on the return hunt finding the rest of the rifle.

We didn't find the lock plate, but we found the trigger assembly.

Completely virgin ground. 1860s locks, Indian Head pennies and a worm syrup bottle laying on top of the ground, the musket was laying on top too. It was my 4x great uncle's house, and he carried a Springfield during the Civil War. That's why I'm so stoked about this find.

Here is the trigger assembly.

If the lock isn't found, it could have been removed, and recycled to another rifle. Just a thought.....

Possibly. My hunch is that it's under the hornets nest next to where we found the gun.

nice :treasurechest:, would like to see all your finds.
I should have popped over and said hi while you were up

last time I was over that way I saw someone had painted over the back of the barn
at what used to be my great uncles Stone house on the corner.

the first frost of the year should slow down those bees :coffee2:
