Driving past the town hall & Post office, I see a pile of boxes out for trash pickup, figure I'll stop & take a look.
A box full of old Bibles, picked a large leatherbound late 1800s for the house.
Next box is a set of world stamp ID books from 1903- 1919. one US stamp book 1937
in one of them were 10 tobacco ration stamps from 1916, a tax stamp for 30 lb of margarine 1915, and a stamp postmarked 'Asheville NC 1957' Hello Mike, At 'All around Ashville'!!!!
Last box, Two weighted sterling candlesticks! well if someone wants to throw them away, I'll be glad to add them to my collection!

Wow! All very nice, especially the sterling candlesticks. My girlfriend recently threw out a broken sterling toe ring, so be on the lookout for that too!

Great looking items there Herbie! Some people throw out the best junk!
I found a similar pair of your candlestands on eBay with this description:

3 inches tall 3 1/2" diameter marked "La Pierre L Sterling Reinenforced weighted
Listing for $10

Here is a pic for your reference.

Hello friends!
At this point, we should reflesión on the following problem: ::)

What is happening with the antiques market ... Why two silver candlesticks in excellent condition, paid only $ 10?
The same goes for all other antiques .... :dontknow:
Greetings!

Good eye and some great finds.
Thanks for your replies!
a couple years back at the town church rummage sale, i bought a box of 6 wrist watches for $10, 3 base metal, one, a Timex automatic, never heard of these. a lady elgin 14K, and a Desta Incabloc 17 jewel swiss auto, all functional, all vintage.
earlier this summer, I bought a jar of buttons for 50C, had 2 pristine Scoville Nh Militia buttons (my avatar), & a 1924 brass pin commemorating the 150th anniversary of the storming of Ft William & Mary by the Citizens of New Castle. the powder & arms taken were used at the battle of Bunker Hill. This was the first overt action of our Revolution. (and was initiated by Paul Reveres FIRST rum fueled warning ride)
you can find lots of info by searching 'fort william and mary'
The Pin is now on display in NC Historic society. HH to All! :hello2:

Nice! Who throws out a Bible anyway....glad you rescued them.

Did you rescue all the bibles or just one? Nice finds on the rest.

Great finds! :headbang: It always amazes me what people will throw out. :dontknow:

As to answer the people wondering why those candle holders aren't more valuable, it's because "weighted" sterling means that they have a very thin layer of sterling on the outside, but the insides are filled with cement or similar material. There isn't very much sterling involved. When I find "weighted" sterling, I remove the sterling from the cement and sell it that way. I get more doing that than I would trying to sell them as candle holders or whatever. Still a good find--especially with the price of silver lately.

Thanks for All Your replies!
I didn't rescue all the Bibles, There were Dozens, and late 1800s missals & song books & records, & stamp books. thought about trying to find a Church that could use them, considering their age and condition, (some Foxed & splotched from storage)
also, aren't Bible versions rather 'Church Specific' so only a certain one is appropriate?
Also thought how would I properly dispose of them if unwanted. I decided to leave them, Good day & HH to you all! :icon_thumleft:
just searched 'proper Bible disposal', from Wiki:

1Consider the Religious Faith you prescribe to. A Roman Catholic may not use the same method as a Southern Baptist, and another Protestant Faith may again vary in their recommended technique. If you can address the question directly to a church official of your faith, do so, and disregard the following steps.2Look at how the Holy Bible is viewed by your particular denomination or faith. Most, if not all, Christian faiths consider the "Word of God" Holy (literally, set apart), but the pages, bindings, and ink of the book are thought of as a vessel, and the content of the words themselves the portion of the Bible which is sacred, or holy. In this respect, any disposal method from burying to recycling is acceptable.3Consider the intent of your disposal method. If you respect the Holy Bible as a sacred text, you should choose a method which is not deliberately defiling or irreverent. Burying or burning, would not mix the pages of your Bible with common household refuse and cause it to be subjected to objectionably gross conditions.
Burying the Bible. Wrapping the Bible in a clean, plain white cloth, or building a small wooden casket would give the Holy Book a reverent final resting place. The Jews have a tradition of burying defiled or damaged copies of their sacred texts in a cemetery, usually with a body, after performing liturgical rites over them.
Burning the Bible. This should be done in a reverent, somber fashion. Building a small bonfire and placing the Book in the flames to ensure that it burns completely, and nature will scatter the ashes.

I would venture their fair market value at about $40,
though I think if I peeled these, (I won't) they would yield more than 2 oz silver.
As you said, worth more peeled than intact. What a shame.
