back to the county parks...

For July and August I'll be hitting as many county parks as I can. Went to two today. The first was so-so with lots of beer bottle caps but I did get some clad and a cross key fob with the tip broken off; the key fob cleaned up well. Second park is one I've been to in the past, but it had been two years so there was a fresh round of clad. I did unearth a pocket knife. It cleaned up well and then it went into olive oil for a while. Turns out it is a Sam McDowell scrimshaw design from 1999. At the end of the hunt I came upon the remains of a large tree stump and not far from it I dug two wheats, so there may be some older coins nearby. Clad total today is $5.15. Good hunt for the first foray outside the city in a long time.

Finds.webp

Like the scrimshaw knife McCDig! Don't see many of those on TNet.

Thanks Tuberale! Most of the pocket knives we find are toast, falling apart. This one was a more recent drop, being only an inch or so deep.

Very nice collection of recent drops. I too like the knife. Smart move on checking around the tree stump. Many of us always check around huge old trees that provided shade to picnickers many years ago. Why is it that some of us forget that these stumps did the same thing? Those wheat pennies may be a telltale sign.
Congrats.

Very nice and detailed pocket knife, congratulations! :occasion14:

Nice finds . I like the knife

Nice to see your digging targets in other parks McCDig. Congrats on the 2 wheats, the pocket knife and Fob. :occasion14:

Thanks L-D! The wheats were a surprise. Most of the coin targets were taken from a high background of trash, which I didn't mind, as its an indication of lots of activity. The wheats came form an area where there wouldn't be as many trash signals and one of them was down about four inches. Headed to a school yard tomorrow AM early.

Thanks 46wheat! I was psyched to pull the pocket knife. It looked like it had high potential of looking good after cleaning. Only rust is on a steel spring that work the scissor tool.

Thanks Art. Hope to get some more good finds by putting in the hours.

Thanks Professor! Didn't know anything about Sam McDowell until I found that knife. :happysmiley:

Thanks ATW! Good luck on those New York parks.
