Interesting photo & very interesting college. Looks like it was CO-ED.
Including teacher Nellie Canine, 12 males & 12 females.
Wonder if they lived in a CO-ED Dorm? Some lucky guy must have gotten paired up with Nellie. (for extra credits)
I'm willing to bet that a degree from Swamp College was a ticket to huge successes in life.

I enlarged it & touched it up a bit in case you can't find a better picture. Cheers ! J.T.G.

Some history on Nellie:
Nell was born 27 October 1890 in Browns Valley to Fisher B. and Tassie Mathers Galey. In 1908 she graduated from Waveland High School and then attended Indiana University. On 9 April 1921 she married Joseph R. Canine in Washington D.C. Mrs. Canine was the secretary for the Chief of the Children's Bureau in Department of Labor in Washington, a secretary for the Home Economics Department at Purdue University, and retired from Wabash College's Chemistry Department. Mrs. Canine also operated and owned the Weatherill Restaurant at Browns Valley (anyone have a picture of this restaurant?) and taught school at Browns Valley. This interesting woman lived to be 105 years old (10 November 1995).
Don in SoCal.

My counting skills need to be honed a tad it seems, as I came up with 14/11

You are correct ! I counted wrong I missed the 3 little guys behind the girls !!
Amazing that Nellie lived to be 105. ("Macaydon")
Thanks "creskol". !!
"Blackfoot58", I was thinking the same thing. Lots of snickering behind her back.
But, she may have had a good sense of humor & probably was aware of the negatives of marrying a man named "Canine". Her friends & family too. If she was self-deprecating like myself, she may have made fun of herself also.
" Good morning class. I will be your teacher this semester". And as she writes her name on the chalkboard she says; " My name is Mrs. Nellie... Galey.... Canine.....Woof Woof " !!!

Found another picture of a class at Swamp College. Not sure of the year it was taken.
Swamp College was actually Township School No. 4.

This appears to be a different swamp college from the one I’m researching. Its interesting there were 2 schools with that name. The reason why they called it swamp college was because there was an ancient lake in Montgomery county called Ancient Lake Barney if I remember right. The last bit of the lake was the swamp, that’s how it got the name. Read about it in an old book about the county before.
