Went hunting with treblehunter today. And had not so great hunt this morning. .He did find something cool.Ill let him post..Anyway after he left. I went down the road and seen this really old house (1760) the lady told me after I knocked. ..Anyway I went through me speach and told her I would share ans show hee what I find and she told me go for it but don't bother showing her because she is going to take a nap...lol..I said thanks and went on my way...15 min later I got this big signal was not going to dig but figured what the hell you just never no...Glad I did...About 1 inches down I see this sword handle. ..Was scared to pull it out..I had to stand up and pull amd out pops the hole sword. ..Felt like Excalibur! !!!!
Any help on idea would be great...I think its military. ...Lot of revolutionary going on in the area. ...

I think Gunsils suggestion of the monthly meeting at Easten sounds good to me. My belief is as metal detectorist, we don't find a whole lot of swords, might be above our pay grade. I'm thinking we need the sword experts like Gunsil said. Silvertree chaser, could you contact your buddy and see if he could send pix of the identical sword?

The club doesn't meet again until September. For now, I'll make a few calls and see if I can track down the member who found the sword.

That is one very nice find, no matter how old it may be, and it does look old and in great condition too. It would probably have been deliberately buried - maybe even wrapped in greasy rags to preserve it, this was often done with weapons to keep them out of kids hands, avoid them being stolen etc. Congrats Great Job :icon_thumright: Nuggy

Well I for one don't know a darn thing about swords. However, that being said I get excited finding a mercury dime. If I were to find that sword (no matter how old it is, military or not) I would multiply my mercury dime excitement by at least 32 X at seeing this sword!! Congratulations on a wonderful and unique find.

Have you gone back to talk to the lady (avoiding nap time) and inquired a little deeper about the story of the land? Had great-grandpa Skeezix been the Grand Poo-Bah of a local service organization? Had they filmed a movie about the French Revolution on the grounds?

Yes, I was trying to stretch the possibilities but in seriousness, you may glean some meaningful history from the woman with a few, thoughtful questions.

Regardless of what it is, it's still old, and it's a freaking sword! How many detectorists have ever dug a sword? GREAT display piece, and please give the blade some treatment. Maybe suspend it so just the blade is in apple cider vinegar, then coat with evaporust, oil, or crisco and bake at low temp to protect from further rusting. If the button on the end of the handle is iron, perhaps some rust converter painted on. Would be nice to keep that great green patina on the grip.

Congrats on an excellent find,

Buck

I'd love to find something like that. Have you found out anything more about it?

Ok heres what you do,junk or real.Take the sword take a close look at the blade for any cracks, defects. Then take a 4x4 or a log and hack at it with the sword. If the blade is real and made for battle it wont be damaged. If the blade is junk it will either snap or bend.Be careful if it snaps though, the broken portion could have some good velocity to it

That is not a US or Confederate manufactured sword, although it is similar in some ways. The French were the first to copy the Roman Gladius in modern times, and the 1830 Pattern Artillery Sword (US) was copied from the French design. However, many fraternal organizations used a similar design. Many variations were produced at Solingen and Klingenthal. I visited the museum at Klingenthal just a year ago with germandigger, and you would be amazed at the variety of patterns. Nice museum, by the way, in a quaint village in Lorraine France. Your sword is one of those variants... you might never nail it down. Perhaps if you sent those pics to a sword identification specialist, there is a chance that there was an example they've seen. But I bet this is a scarce one.
PS- Don't go stress testing it the way suggested above.... breaking it is not a test of whether it is authentic or not.

I didnt say to break it.:laughing9:I said if it breaks it is most likely junk. Its most likely a repo with a stainless steel blade, stainless does rust.

I would agree that the sword is a reproduction - the construction lends to that as does the condition of the blade. Still a very cool find.
