MD enthusiasts working out of Tucumcari, Fort Sumner, west to Las Vegas might find it worthwhile to do some research on the Texan-Santa Fe Expedition of 1841, with particular attention to the places they surrendered [at least in New Mexico] The smaller surrender site's near Anton Chico, larger group surrendered near Montoya at Laguna Colorado.

A friend of mine picked up a few good pieces at the Anton Chico site, worked a bit more heavily at Laguna Colorado and believed he hadn't even scratched the surface at the time of his death.

Texans further east in the Amarillo/Canyon area could probably do fairly well where the main group had such troubles, mutiny, Kiowa/Quahadi attacks, etc, and were marooned for a while more or less.

Below is Anton Chico. There's an old man at the store in town, Abercrombie, whose family has been there since the mid 1800s who can direct you to whomever you need to get permission from to work the site these days if he's still alive. 100 Texans surrendered here and were stripped of everything they had before they were marched barefoot to Mexico.

A few more surrendered at Villenueva at the site of the State Park there. If you search the hills opposite the road among the rocks you'll be able to see several small fortresses up the side that were constructed to intercept the Texas force it it reached there. Fortunado Gallegos of Villenueva spent many years managing the park and knows the entire story. If he's still alive. The hills where the fortifications are located aren't visited much and few people today known why they're known locally as 'The Texas Hills'.

Not any sign of interest in this at the moment so I've posted a few more details in case someone comes across it on a search engine sometime and wants to follow-up after I'm not available to provide anything.
