It is definitely a neat piece. Sometimes digging around here I find chunks of these things all over for some reason.
Been finding pieces for over 50 years myself.

Not willing to acquire one to see if freezing it full of water will break it.
I'd expect ice on top first. Then growing downward. Vs expanding upward.
Perhaps putting pressure on the edge of the crock at it's top first.

Then there is good ol "droppage".
And they just broke probably.

Here's some comments when I searched for why they broke.
Not really any answer , but some more explanation of uses!

Where would you be , and with what to show for it , if you hadn't changed course 35 years ago?

You've certainly got it sorted out for the better.
Not that it didn't take life altering effort only you could control!
Dead probably
In /79-80 period the family had a lottery on me (How long will Jim be alive) My oldest bro that knew me the best, gave his bet at 6 months.
It right peeved me off many years later when I found all this out.
I questioned him years later about the short time stamp.
He said "Really look at what you were-and how crazy things were-what would you have given if the tables were turned?
Ya I guess he was right.
Quitting was easy actually:
I just got bored with it, not enjoying a May 24 fireworks display.
So I just quit, that night.
Never looked back on it, life is a light switch, it's either on/off.

Finally back home...sorry I missed all the fun on board. It was a long trip, and I had no time for hunting very much. Work started at 6am, and most days didn't end until 10-11pm. Wi-fi and internet were shaky almost everywhere which made it very frustrating to post on t-net. Any way im back and ready for a keg of rum !!

Welcome back Bart.
I'm sure you've earned a little playtime after the family 👪 type things are taken care of.

Here's yesterday's finds. A tiny babies spoon(plow was not kind to it), this I really like first I've ever seen like it a full metal Winchester 10 gauge shotgun shell sadly plowed to death as well but I'm happy to have it first I've seen( maybe more significant but so damaged), and a medallion that looks quite old afraid to mess with it much as I screw stuff up. Has moose head with a banner that goes down it that appears to have had something written on it but can't make it out say I O F across the top. I have till the 23rd to do more searching maybe I should. 23rd they plant sweet potatoes and once that happens my mine is up for metal detecting on this land.
Nice ones John,I like that old brass 10 Gauge.even if it,s been plowed a few times. Scarce in 10 Ga.

Confirmation, yes! :hello2: Thank you. I bet there are a lot in your area, also. I think you might be closer to Roseville.

Feeling better, I hope?

I had a bad fever yesterday morning, to the point I was hallucinating. I was walking around my basement, wondering why the breakroom was dark, and nobody was there. I then realized I was in my own house. I stayed in bed all day yesterday. Today I feel like nothing ever happened, I'm completely normal. It's weird.
