I've always watched buzzards sunning themselves in cottonwood trees and thought they might have something to do with it.

Reason I asked, is because we went down a few months ago and climbed a mountain called Cook's Peak in Southwest New Mexico and saw some mighty big birds.

(sorry, no pics of the birds; had the camera in my pack at the time and couldn't get it out quick enough-there were 2 and they just swooped in low over 1 ridge and disappeared over the next ridge).

I don't think we have any condors or anything in our area, and it may have just been the air and sun playing tricks with our vision, but they sure were big.

I was raised in the Deming area. My guess would be that you probably saw some Golden Eagles. Quite a few in that area.

I can guarantee you that extremely large birds (20 foot wingspan) did and still do exist in the American Southwest - I've seen one myself in the canyons of the Cookes Range. My posts #8 and 10 at http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,93640.0.html speak for themselves. In addiition, Dave Zander recently spotted one about 50 miles as the crow flies (pardon the pun) east of our Cookes Range sighting. Well, there just might be something to this after all. We sure thought they were big, but kind of talked each other out of it afterwards. Clear day and no weather to speak of.

The link doesn't work for me anymore either - guess the TV station culled their database. It was about a three minute interview where Zander described a very large bird he spotted east of the Rio Grande somewhere between Las Cruces and T or C as I recall. It sounded similar to the thing we saw NE of Deming.

I'd poke around about N 32°30', W 107°45'. Lots of other stuff around there would make the trip interesting too.

Does anyone know any of the stories/legends behind the Indian Thunderbird?

About 10 or more yrs ago.

My brother Joe used to fish after work, at the river, often.
The first time, it was right at before sunset. He waded into the water some, and cast his line.
As he stood motionless, waiting for a the fish to bite, a large bird landed right next to him.
He was startled, and in a sorta defensive motion without thinking he raised his fishing pole to point at the bird.
My brother Joe said he was pointing the fishing pole up at the bird(my brother I`m guessing is 5`10").
The bird was taller then him, had no feathers. The birds had no feathers but skin, with short hair like a bat?

The bird immediately saw him and jump up flapping his wings causing the water to move, as my brother felt the strong wind hitting his face and body.

This year 2011. A few months ago. I was in new Mexico. My older brother heard that I was there , and he came over to my Dads
house to visit.
My brother Eloy, I have to say at this point is not a treasure hunter and is a no nonsense type of individual. He says treasure is having a job and working hard, blah blah blah..
some of you may have run into this type of attitude.
I believe the same thing. It`s just that.. I found a fun thing to do, that I call a hobby.
Even though my brother is that way , He has given me leads to possible treasure.

Anyway he works on the oilfields of NM. When he gets to my Dads, Joe and I are already talking treasure and nonsense.
Well, one of the first things he said to my brother Joe is... I seen your bird.

His Company headquarters out of Eunice NM has a project, somewhere between Carlsbad and Pecos, I think it`s highway 285?.

I, then ask what it looked like.. He said he was going to work... or was he coming from work ...well, I am not going to call him to get the story straight. As he was driving on highway 285, he saw a large bird flying across the highway. At first he thought it was just a bird, until he noticed the long feet straight back and the long beak forward. But when he saw the head shape protruding back also, He new he was seeing the bird that my brother Joe had told him about.

I believe my two brothers. The thunder bird is out there, or the teradactul.
I said to Eloy, so its just like in the movie? He said yes. I was thinking the movie Jurassic Park, But I can`t tell you if he was thinking the same movie.

The bird was flying west, following the black river. Therefore, I believe it lives in caves among the Guadalupe's.

It sure sounds interesting. I go to N M every spring to detect ghost towns for 2 weeks. I'll be looking next spring.
