I found these old chain links at the top of LAUERL HILL with my GARRET
these are very old
what kind of iron are these?
are they worth anything
I seen similar ones on google for 500 bucks or so
but who knows
these are pretty old

I,ll throw in a clod of dirt.The chains are,as has been said,machine electro welded,not hand forged.The type of links are modern,not old style,twisted link I think it,s called. Don,t matter if you found them at the top of Laurel Hill,those particular chains never lowered any wagons down Laurel Hill.There may well be chains that lowered wagons down Laurel Hill there,but that,s not one of them.Keep looking.

And a fine old tool it is.They made them to last back then.For what it,s worth I,ve seen one of those used for a myriad of tasks. An old gent I knew kept one in his truck to pull himself out of mudholes.This before the day when 4WD and Warn winches were common. A little slow,but sure as the dawn!

So serious question. Are artifacts from 1800s or earlier including the Civil War illegal to remove and thus protected?

It would be illegal if BLM or State or Federal land in some way. But I do not remember him saying that.

I think he,s misreading the ARPA I think it,s called.Lots of folks misunderstand that when trying to show how smart they are and all.Besides the chain is clearly welded twist link,modern as can be so no problem. Every tract of federal,or state land has it,s own rules depending on the agency in control and leanings of the local Kommissar in charge.
