I all, dug my first staff button but can't figure out the time frame. I know it has to do with the back marks. Any help would be appreciated!

Your US Army Staff Officer uniform cuff-size button has what button-collectors call the "extra-wide" version of applied rim, which was rarely seen before the 1870s but became very popular afterward. The "Staff Officer" 3-piece button was discontinued in 1902 (replaced by the Great-Seal-of-the-US button), so IMHO your button dates from sometime between the late-1870s and 1901.
