Got this odd little piece today from the water. It is very thin with some crude decorating on one side. It came in very low on the meter but is in decent shape for a water find so silver or probably of tombac like material. Most stuff from here is circa 1680-1720. Any ideas?

I agree is could be part of a book clasp. It looks like brass to me.

Maybe you're finding cut silver from coins?

Maybe someone was skimming coins. Not sure exactly when reed edge coins started but I've read that was the reason why.

Check out this little .5 gram piece from the center of a pine tree shilling
