At last we were able to get back out in the fresh air! The fields we wanted to do were being worked, so we decided to try a random field.. we were very happy we did. An amazing button… 2 amazing horse shoes… musket balls, a conjoined musket ball, more of our special lead thingys… and another Roman nail (?). The weather was perfect, and we had 2 Red Kites hovering over us… took a pic.. but only had my phone cam, so not the best, they really are beautiful birds. All in all an amazing day we are so very lucky xx

Those Red Kites are very friendly, had them come within a few metres of my head. Seemed to be looking for the worms we dug up. We had an amazing find today, will post shortly.

That's sure a wide horse shoe, must have a lot of age to it.

You guys find some of the coolest stuff. That big shoe looks a lot more primitively made. Is that an arm holding a sword on the button?

Ahh thank you x yes it’s an arm holding a sword… really unusual button, will add it to the research box for def. The horse shoe is amazing… again not been able to find a date for it… but will keep looking! xx

I think that one is a broken crotal bell top? the underside is concave… that horse shoe is amazing…. We’ll do some research nd see if I can get a date! xx

Neat stuff on a beautiful day in the country it appears with a visit by some wonderful looking birds. I'm curious on what those cylindrical shaped lead things might be? Almost look like shotgun slugs, but I doubt that's what they are. I'm fairly sure they're coupled to something that tells a story of what once went on and why you would need them.

Almost look like shotgun slugs, but I doubt that's what they are. I'm fairly sure they're coupled to something that tells a story of what once went on and why you would need them.

We are not sure… the nearest thing i can find are Capstan shot, also known a bobbin shot… but they vary in size.. so not sure! 🤔 x

More great finds! Congrats. The shoes, could they be oxen shoes? I think they're usually two pieces, but...? And the small lead finds remind me of air rifle pellets, but cannot find anything quite like them. And unsure of their size. If they're 5 to 6 mm in diameter, they may be pellets.

Oh, I see now they're not the same diameter. Maybe it's been suggested, but my next thought is they're rivets. A lead rod, could be hammered out at the farm, pushed through a hole punched through two layers of leather, cut to length, and hammered on both ends. Voila. Not presentation-grade, but would function. The leather has long ago rotted away.

The typical looking shoe is a bit bigger isn't it? These shoes you found are creating lot's of interest. There are a few horse people on here as well as artifact lovers. Any chance you could post a photo of them together?

Internet Archaeol. 40. Atkinson and Preston. Commerce and communications (FF 6 and 7)

I've found a paper referencing these weights. I've never seen this type but the number of them suggests a nearby industry or place of commerce. Yours are similar to the C12 types but like me they have made educated guess on its use & no definitive answer. I thought they may have been an alternative to a loom weight that normally have a hole instead of a shallow groove to hold the wool thread downwards. Like them, I'm not sure how to date them, could be Roman but Medieval is also a strong possibility. Here is what they say;

''C12. Reel-shaped. This is similar to the bun-shaped type C13, but with a shallow groove round the middle and a flattish top and bottom. These weights could have had a cord tied around the waist for use as a hanging weight, or a plumb bob. No wear patterns were visible after conservation to assist identification. These objects weighed 24g and 128g.

40. Type C12 weight (Figure 528.C12). Wt 128g. SF7164, Machining layer 17150, Area A''

Keep them all together, make a note of which fields produces the greater number, this is evidence for something important, just not sure what yet, & it will become clearer with more finds.
