You guys are always much help. I have a few questions about this photograph. It was found in a drop front desk that on the back of the small drawer was hand written, "J. Carson New Almaden". I put a post up about a year ago about this desk. Anyway, what company do you think this train is from and could it be the same era as the New Alamaden mining days? As always, your help is appreciated!

When was the mine operational? If you can't get your questions answered here, consider posting on a train forum.

Cool photo.
The coal car has a long name written down the side (unless that's a decorative stripe?).
So maybe... rule out railroads with short names?

"Southern Pacific Railroad" operated in that vicinity. A guess.

I'm no expert on railway ephemera, but based on the age of the coal fired train and the style of the iron railway bridge span (which is likely 'newer' than the locomotive) I'm thinking your pic dates to the 1880s. :icon_scratch:

Can anyone confirm the locomotive configuration? 0-6-0? 2-6-0? Hard to tell with the bridge in the way...

That would be a 4-6-0, 1890s-1920s. Because the photograph is blurred, it's hard t tell.

Nice photo! It looks like a lot of places along the N&W line in the Shenandoah Valley in the 50s. I think the length of
the name may your best clue.
