I am new to this so I hope this is not a real stupid question. I am going to be traveling to FL in the panhandle and NE coast in late October. Are there any beaches that I can legally use a metal deteector on without any kind of permit? I am new to this so I hope this is not a real stupid question.

Not a stupid question. We were all new once and asked for the guidelines.

Most of Florida's beaches are public. You can metal detect on all the public beaches between the toe of the dunes (don't dig in the little hills top side of the beach) to the water line.

You can go into the water if you have an appropriate machine, unless your near a leased treasure site or Archaeological Preserve. Below I've attached the State Park basic rules, but still check with the ranger station first.

Read the following and poke around the Beach and Shallow Water section as well for additional information. Have a great time while here.
