Treasure Hunters Claim Pennsylvania State Officials Blocking Dig for Lost Civil War Gold
Treasure Hunters Claim Pennsylvania Officials Blocking Dig for Lost Civil War Gold
Treasure hunters on the trail of a lost Civil War gold shipment claim they have discovered the fortune in a remote location of Pennsylvania, but state and federal authorities have blocked them from digging it up, reports say.

The treasure hunters, calling themselves Finders Keepers, claim to have found the gold buried in a state-owned forest at Dents Run, 135 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. However, state officials have denied permission for the group to dig at the location, the Associated Press reported.
Still, authorities appear to take the claims seriously because on March 13, state officials and the FBI accompanied the group to Dents Run and set up a post. Neither authorities nor the treasure hunters are revealing what is transpiring, however. Indeed, Finders Keepers owner Dennis Parada insisted the FBI had him under forced silence.
The only public comment by the FBI is that it is conducting “court-authorized” activity with its participation in the mysterious activity.
Finders Keepers has been chasing the legend of the lost Gettysburg gold shipment for some time. Rumor has it that President Abraham Lincoln sent 52 bars of gold — some tales set the number at 26 — toward the Harrisburg area in 1863 to be used to pay his soldiers.
But somehow en route from Wheeling, West Virginia, the wagon carrying the precious cargo was attacked, and the gold disappeared. The wagon, along with a contingent of dead federal soldiers, was later found, but the gold had vanished. The last time the wagon and its escort were seen was in St. Marys, Pennsylvania.
The shipment would be worth up to $55 million today.
According to WJAC, in 2012, Finders Keepers claimed it tracked the gold to an area in Dents Run but could not come up with the $15,000 bond the state had demanded to begin digging.
The group says they found the gold using high-powered metal detecting devices.

jeff-gordon: Nope, you're not. There are too many TN threads on this story. I find it helpful if members look for a thread that has already started, rather than just starting a new one. I think there are half a dozen about this story.

I think I missed a few - these are the primary ones.

As more information has come out, the shipment was supposed to be destined for the Philadelphia mint. It still has far too many holes.

Good luck to all,

No, you're not.
Am I the only one who thinks its half lies?
Probably a conspiracy to steal the gold and cover it up.
That's why the gold bars, instead of coins. The pay thing
was a cover.
And, technically, the gold belongs to the Union soldiers, NOT the government. But our rapacious government has that bad case of resentment that detectorists have to deal with from outsiders to the hobby.
Do you think our fine, honest, upstanding government is going to hunt down the descendants of these soldiers and give them their pay, in gold? Do monkeys have wings?
So don't waste my time defending the thieves who rule over a formerly free people.
The government thinks our money is their money.

Maybe the gold bars where being moved from mint holdings? Why not coins is a interesting question. Just don't know.

I suggest the money would belong to the Federal government until it was paid out. Personally, I don't buy the whole payroll story, but IF it were true, the funds wouldn't belong to the soldiers. If that were the case, they wouldn't have been paid. If the US Military loses a payroll prior to disbursement, the money has to be replaced and the members of the military paid.

We are the government - of, by, and for the people.

Good luck to all,

If I am wrong, please excuse my ignorance and I blame it on ALL the different stories out there. As I heard and Old Bookaroo also stated, the wagon was on its way to the Philadelphia mint. With that in mind, I can see them transporting gold bars so the mint could then take those gold bars and do what Mint's do, in this case, turn the bars into coin ? :dontknow: Then maybe use the coins for payroll.

Simon1: So far, so good. Where did the gold come from? Why was it being carried in a wagon and not on a train? Why wasn't the gold carried by a Pacific Mail steamer - as were all the other gold shipments from California east? Why was the guard so small? On another thread I posted a brief account of the Wham Payroll Robbery in Arizona. The documentation on this one is extensive - for a sum lost of just over $28,000. Where is the similar level of documentation for this story? I have also posted a link to an excellent account of the fabled lost Confederate treasury. Banks that lost specie at the end of the War spent decades in court trying to get it back. if this gold came from a bank - and not from the US Government - where is the record of litigation?

Good luck to all,

PHOENIX, AZ 8/25/16 – A group of Lost Dutchman Gold Mine hunters say they have located the famed Beale Treasure, inside the boxcars of a Nazi Gold Train stored inside Victorio Peak by Nazi soldiers with the help of aliens after the second world war.

The finds are reported to include “vats of jewels, bars of gold, bags of gold dust, and Spanish silver coins.” The team of LDGM hunters say they will use the large Nazi flying disc also found inside the mountain, to transport the entire Nazi gold train back to Phoenix, where they will transfer the treasure to a new museum being built just outside the legendary Lost Dutchman Gold Mine, located off the Apache Trail, in the nearby Superstition Mountains.

The group remained mum on how they found the train inside Victorio Peak, but vehemently denied any secret government involvement. “We have been researching this treasure for years,” said group leader Sgt. Hal Orojumper, “building a strong network of people that have generated leads and done the long hours of research that led us to the find.”

The Nazi flying saucer containing the lost gold train is expected to land at Sky Harbor International airport sometime next weekend. When asked about other finds inside the mountain, Sgt. Orojumper stated the team was not yet ready to discuss the possibilities of other finds, as they are bound by HBO and History Channel contracts.

The battles at the time may have something to do with the gold bars being moved. The minting of coins may have not been a high priority at the time, just don't know.

Question: the #9 post states;

“The gold got lost,” he said. “It was pretty much a wilderness area, and they got wrapped around in the mountains over in Dents Runs or Hicks Run.”
Some reports say there were 52 bars, but Mr. Burke said he thought there were 26, with each 14-carat bar weighing 50 pounds, making the trove potentially worth millions of dollars.

I'm not questioning Assembler because I read this elsewhere as well but here's the question:

It states that each of the 50 pound gold bars are 14 carat which means they are 58.33% Gold and 41.67% alloy (which could be Copper, Silver or who knows what). Now, the Gold coins minted for currency contain 90% Gold and 10% Copper. Since the story states the Gold bars were being delivered to the Philly mint to be converted into coinage, they would have to add pure Gold to the Gold bars to meet the 90% Gold ratio.

If this is true about the gold bars then the gold bullion from the miners appears to be melted and poured into the bars. The refining of gold content of the bars was the next step before minting into coins. There should be markings on the bars to show the content. The silver and copper metals can also be minted into coins as well.
