I would think that a small experiment would be in order . You should go to a metal detector dealer that carries several different types of units . Try to see how large a chunk of gold it takes to make the unit "sound off" and at what distance . Now you must know what size gold the river is capable of producing . Flakes will probably not even come close to getting a reaction from your unit regardless which one you get . If larger pieces are possible you need to determine where in the river they are collecting , if at all . If this does not look promising there is one other avenue open to you . A Gold Bug 2 will be ideal for working the bedrock cracks along the shore . Since gold is present in the river there's a good chance that some pieces have fallen into these "natural riffles". Good luck .
