I found this spoon at a cabin site that I thought dated to the 1920’s or so
I can’t find hardly anything on the union nickel co other than it dates to the 1870’s. Way older than anything I expected at that site
Does anybody know anything more about this spoon?

Is the spoon made of thin brass? Much thinner than a modern spoon? Looks like mid 1800’s design to me.

Yes very thin, I originally thought it was more or less a modern stamped piece of trash but now it looks to be an oldie

Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Very cool spoon! Congrats! :icon_thumleft:

Nice find, congrats! :occasion14:

Thats a nice old spoon.

Good find Nice to find stuff like thst at old sites cause theres bound to be more

The cabin was intentionally burned in the 50’s because people were breaking in and having parties, I have pictures of my relations there in the 20’s. I figured it was constructed in the early 1900’s but that spoon seems out of that date range. That’s not to say someone wouldn’t keep flatware that is 40 years old but makes me wonder if the cabin is older than I thought.

Recovered one of these myself just this week (5/11 or so 2021). Bit tarnished but stunningly unbent, smooth and with unchipped rims. Ran into a lot of flatware over years and this was in best shape of them all; impressed. But yes, little to NO info on Union Nickel Co.; x the online maker's mark catalog that may not have been seen on original post IDs with same MM as 1870s - 1880s, possibly from Union Nickel Plating Works (not ref'd yet). Found on BLM limits of Marysville, Montana on "picnic hill" above a Chinese District that was pretty much gone by the 1900s w/o any later deposition-lag dumps sites.

The Union Nickel Company is a poorly-documented company that operated out of Boston, MA producing flatware in the 1870s.

Although their mark is sometimes speculatively attributed to the Union Nickel Plating Works, this was different company, operating from both Providence, RI and Springfield, MA around the same time (1870s/1880s). They also made flatware.

Aye. Appreciate that distinction and won't waste time chasing that path.
