Yesterday I decided to head back to a woods spot I hunted once before.
I’ve found a couple of musket balls and square nails the last time I went there so I knew this site had potential.

When I dug this cross it was covered in dirt, but I knew it was Silver cause of the signal I got.

It was only when I cleaned it thou that I noticed it was a silversmiths handmade Cross.

No makers mark on it and don’t know the exact age of the Cross, but I love the art work on it.

Well this find surely made my Day.

The "death face" at the base of the cross (which may signify Golgotha--the "place of the skull"), was a common feature of tombstones in the mid-1700s. I highly suspect that this crucifix dates to the same time frame.

Hey Buck, here's one of my favorite articles about faces on stones, it includes examples of the style head you're speaking about. http://www.histarch.illinois.edu/plymouth/deathshead.html

To the OP - I missed this one somehow but it's remarkable. Most certainly old and very cool. Congrats!

That really IS a special find, really. With finding something like that, I can't help thinking that I was standing in the same place as the person who lost it had been, wondering who it was, and under what circumstances, what year, where he was coming from & going to etc. etc., a very personal item, and from his fingers to yours after how many decades? Again, a very special find. WOW

Sorry, Mad cladder, but INRI stands for "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews", in latin. ( Iēsus Nazarēnus, Rex Iūdaeōrum )
Which is what Pilate commanded be posted on the cross.

Yes. And in addition to the Latin it was also written in Greek and Hebrew.

One of the absolute coolest finds on Tnet, especially with the size of the thing. Amazing!

Congrats on the well deserved banner, that's an incredible find!

If I were you, I couldn't wait to get back there to detect! Hopefully as you continue to detect the area, it'll slowly tell it's story of who was there, and what was going on, to shed more light on the story of the cross. That's just amazing. We detect some of the Spanish mission influenced sites around California and many religious artifacts are found (mainly Indian trade trinkets), but don't believe anyone out here has found anything like that.

Brian

You are so correct! The INRI actually just came from much later artists, just looking for an abbreviation, not being able to fit all the script in a smaller painting.
