I dug this US Belt Buckle recently in the Shelbyville TN area at Confederate earthworks. The plate was about 15 inches deep and was hidden amongst five soda cans. This is the third US plate I’ve dug in Reb works. I think the Rebs are using the leather and discarding the plates but it could also be Federal troops camping on top of abandoned camps. I also dug a nice 1859 Indian Head penny.

Hi,
Check out the Middle TN Metal Detecting Club in Nashville. They will get you pluged in and are a great bunch.

Hi,
We think the round brass item with the slit is a powder flask but we are not certain. I have dug several of these in Rebel camps. If anyone has a picture of one before being in the ground please chime in.

One more thing that is interesting about the US belt plate is the brass bar in the middle on the back. In an old relic reference book it says that this is a repair. But i've seen a few like this. I've thougt about it and I wonder if it was Gov't issued like that. I kinda also don't think its a repair because i've never seen any reb plates with Arrowhead hooks. If anyone knows please chime in.
