I would think if it was cast zinc many people would describe it as pretty heavy. Kind of looks articulated to me. Certainly strange.Congrats Natman, nice find!
This looks like zinc die cast to me. It's pretty much a 20th century product for making anything less expensive. As Mike said conduit fittings, toys some auto parts and about any low strength application that could be molded. Has widely been replaced by plastic in the last 2 decades.

Model T Ford timer roller, probably early teens (1910 - 1914). Some of the brass timer rollers had "Ford" stamped or cast into the brass. I added the photo to show a couple different variations. The top left looks to be your roller. Nice find!
