wall sconce?

I found this at a farmhouse site that dates between late 1800s and mid 1950s. This doesn't look valuable but I am curious what it may be - the extensions coming out of the plate appear to have been perpindicular to the plate but have been bent - any idea? My thought was a wall sconce for candles or something like that.... thx.
