Thanks Terry, I'm thinking the Minelab Go Find 20 you mentioned in my other post would be the better buy. What do you think?

I would stick with the Compadre, if I may chime in. It is an incredibly solid, simple and capable detector. If you want the kid to actually find stuff and have a detector that he can learn a hell of a lot from...Compadre. Simplicity really is sometimes the way to go.

That would be my choice but they are damn near impossible to find now.

I’ve used about all modern ones but right now: CTX 3030, White’s MXT Pro, XP Deus, Vaquero, White’s TRX

I would recommend a Cibola or Silver Umax or one of the older models too. Given a choice, the Cibola is more versatile and just as simple to use/set up and light weight. You can also supertune it and get pretty deep with them.
