I found this War of 1812 Light Dragoons pewter belt buckle a number of years ago and am looking to sell it. My Dad did some research and he was told it was one of only two known in existence. Being pewter, I'd like to sell it before it falls apart.

If that plate were mine I would conserve it before it turns to dust. I use a water base polyurethane on pewter buttons. I'm not sure if that is the best thing to do. Maybe someone here really knows conservation of pewter. As far as value, that's probably going to be tough. I've never seen one!!

I coated it with white glue/water

A 50/50 solution of Elmer's glue and water will help preserve it and can be undone if need be.

We used to use soluble nylon for pewter consolidation in museum conservation. There are better chemicals now, in particular polyvinyl acetates like B-72. They are cheap, easy to apply and "breathe" so the soluble salts can migrate out and stop the deterioration.

"White" glue does work to hold the piece together but being hydrophilic and having a small crystal structure eventually it will cause the pewter to decompose.

Ideally you could re-consolidate the piece with electrolytic reduction. That requires several mild sulfuric acid baths afterwards but it will restore the fine detail and the look of pewter. After a thorough drying you can just finish and protect the piece with microcrystalline wax.
