yep zinclons...

In 1981, faced with another rise in the price of copper, the Mint decided to change the composition of the cent to copper-covered zinc. After contract difficulties and production delays, the first such cents were struck at the Philadelphia Mint on January 7, 1982

The soil or even woodchips will destroy zinc pennies, it doesn't eat up copper pennies though.

Modern Coins, a brake hose gasket, small clip, and two small pieces of lead. Also found two pennies that are deteriorating. Anyone have any idea what would cause that?

Ahhh, the dreaded zinc Lincolns (zincolns, we call 'em), one of the true enemy of the detectorist, the other being those nasty aluminum tabs that ring up like gold!
