I did find a rust wagon wheel iron strip what's left a wagon wheel near by left that alone it was rusty

You are the winner, releventchair!! I admit my closed mind did not allow me to even consider Alien technology. That answers all questions on the appearance of the metal and the age. UFOs have visited for a long time. Remember the movie Cowboys & Aliens? Everyone knows there are lots of Alien/UFO activity in the west. Thanks for solving this mystery. I like you will move on. Case closed.

I've read the entire thread, and this has been mentioned a couple times
already..

It is a square nut used with a number of construction applications. Looks
like galvanized steel that sat in a puddle for awhile. You say there were
no power poles, but I'd bet there were high voltage lines (towers) in the area. FWIW I used to sell powerline construction materials, and sold those by the pallet full.

The chain appears modern, but if it was old it would have been a precious resource for any wagons on that trail.

Lackaff, back many years ago I was out bowhunting for deer one late
afternoon, and had built myself a nice blind on the ground. I'm not
there ten minutes and I can hear a large deer mucking around just
beyond some brush...I can see it but really can't make much out.

It started walking towards me, and just as I drew my longbow to full draw I realized it was a huge doe. As I slowly let off I tried everything I
could to grow horns on that deer..she stood there for a minute and
started browsing the bushes just 5 yards from me. I'm still using all
the power of my brain to get horns on her....wasn't happening, and she
finally walked off.

Sometimes, as much as we might want one thing to be something
else, we just have to accept that it's not what we wanted. It sucks,
but it just "is".

My first metal detecting find was some 55 years ago, and it was a big
rusty nail. As a first find, I'd trade it for that nut any day of the week.

Speaking of Nails I did find this old Nail as well it is pretty old it was by the nut

I also found that old wagon piece that busted off and a bent nail
now how did that get there too
they hammered that nail to the wagon part and it looks like its bent and broke off

If it is round shaft... aka shank... which is what it looks like...

then it is "wire nail"... and that dates from 1890 to present day.
