Went to an estate sale yesterday and bought a box full of old newspapers from WWII and in the bottom of the box was this patch. I would just like to know what branch of the military its from and is it a WWII era patch? It has an eagle sitting on the globe and an anchor. Also an "I" at the bottom. I think its probably Navy? but what does the "I" stand for?
Thanks for looking and any help you might have!!!
regards~~sandcreek

Hey Sandcreek, nice estate sale find. Some of those WW2 patches are quite valuable. Here's a link with one similar to yours.

OMG! Did you see the price for the one on the link that looked similar to this one?!?! (MAW-001, WWII Marine corps)$599.99!!
This may be worth putting on ebay! And that "I" that I thought was a letter is maybe a Roman number 1?!
THANKS SO MUCH, Likely Guy for that link!!!!!!

If it's missing a V that would explain the I being so offset. To be honest, I think it's a reproduction but I may be wrong. It does not look to me like the V has been removed. Look at the detail of the patch on the website posted vs this one. It could be a poorly made theater made patch also. I wish I could take a close look at it. It it is the real thing it could be worth big bucks.

The style of the eagle suggests an early patch or a local souvenior item. Lots of them around any military town.

There was a company that sold patches called "The Patch King" for kids to collect WW2 patches during the war and I wonder if this isn't one of those.

oldfireguy--Thanks for all the info on this patch! On the front of the patch the threads are fuzzy next to the "I" almost like they started to sew something on or like they moved the "I" over. But the back of the patch shows no black threads from a missing letter or any loose threads. And along the edges of the patch is army green thread pieces. I took some more pictures so maybe you could see the detail a little better. See what you think...........

Oldfireguy.....NICE..

Here's a link for WWII

http://www.mclm.com/gallery/air_wings.html

But.....Do you think that since the I is not centered that perhaps a V is missing??? = IV
Thanks Angelo!

Looking at those new photos it makes me wonder if a GI removed the V because he needed just a numeral I. A little bit of a mystery.

I registered on the military forum, oldfireuy. When I'm allowed to post a new topic, I will put this on there and see what they think. Thanks for telling me about it. As soon as I find out more about this patch, I think I'll put it on ebay.
Thanks again, everybody, for all the information!! You all have been a GREAT help on this one!!

I collect WWII US militaria and this was supposed to be WWII USMC IV Air Wing patch. The Roman Numeral I is offset so the V could be next to the I for the IV Marine Air Wing. First Air Wing patches have the I centered. The patch is unfinished, which is not uncommon at all for WWII. Some were unfinished or have mistakes in them. Even though the patch is unfinished, many people collected patches during WWII, and often didnt know if there were mistakes in the patches (or didnt mind). Some people would try to collect as many different units as they could and sewn them on blankets (often green army blankets, which might explain the green thread). Once in a while you may see one of these WWII "patch blankets: for sale on ebay. Anyway, the patch has the correct WWII cut edge style (post war patches usually had a merrowed edge which prevented the edge from unraveling). Also, if you put this patch under a black light, it should not glow (post war patches or repros will usually glow from synthetic fibers). Unfinished/mistake patches usually are worth considerably less than the finished ones.
