I see from the answers you are getting the best thing to do ............... IS ............... Get a Platinum ring could be some one will lend you one and put it under your coil and check it out............. Some times a pawn shop will let you check it out in there store.......... I have no Platinum so i can't check it for you ......

How do we discribe a sound with words? Detectors respond to conductivity so the shape, depth and orientation in the ground will affect the VDI numbers and to some extent the sound. Various speakers and headphones can also change the sounds. Keppy's suggestion is your best guide.

Other suggestions are very good. As for vdi i've found that plat rings register lower than a gold ring of the same size.

Adrian, can you elaborate on your reply? The codes you included, how would they be interpreted with Garrett's codes like the at pro? Sorry if it's a dumb question.

HI Bev,

I do not know what numbers will come up on the AT Pro but because Platinum has a similar electrical conductivity to soft iron then two targets, one of iron and the other platinum of similar weights shape and size should produce similar readings and tones on the Pro. So all I can say is that platinum will show over the same range as clean non rusted iron. of cource if it is plated or alloyed with some other metal then all of this will change.

Jewelery and coin hunters rarely find platinum items because they often disc out iron.

a detector like the Explorer that reads both conductivity and ferrous content will possibly give platinum a different TID number and icon location than an iron item of similar size, shape and weight.

The number 106 in the list is actually 10 x 10 to the power minus 6 ( I couldn't figure how to print it up correctly, coz I iz not berry clebber wif key boards)

Wow- that's a lot of info to take in! Thank you so much. I'm still learning codes and have to bury a few choice targets so I can come up with a cheat sheet for myself.

I appreciate it!

Generally I do not bother to bury items when making a 'Cheat Sheet" because air test figures will be close to what the detector will give in ground where it is well ground balanced.
wherever the ground is outside the mineralisation range of the ground balance capability of the detector then the TID readings will/can be all over the place.
detectors that have Fixed GB often give erratic TID readings unless the target is close to the surface.

I am a dig all targets person and rarely take much notice of TID numbers unless I am searching for a specific item or items because I have learnt that a hell of a lot of good targets (Alloyed gold n Plat)show up in the iron range.

But by all means test as many targets in the the ground as you can so as to give yourself an idea of how the detector responds over a wide range of conditions.

I actually got a h4rs or whatever ring made of plat palladium gold and silver... came in 60-63..
1 gram ring.
Prolly the silver content made it ring so high vdi, excellent smooth mid tone tho.
Told my son theres a gold ring as I ws bending to dig it... he said no way... well we were both right.
