MUD, I knew someone would give the answer (and it was you) that it produces a deadly gas and then everyone that reads this would know not to do that. My wife did this many years ago because it was NOT common knowledge at the time and it almost killed her. I wasn't trying to give bad advice but to educate. Sorry if you took it the wrong way and my intention was not malicious in any way.

The static electricity that builds in a dryer can create mini wormholes that for some reason only tend to transport one sock to the other side of the universe. Use fabric softener sheets to disperse the static electricity and thereby halting the creation of said wormholes. Somewhere in the galaxy is a whole lot of single socks, and if those wormholes somehow reverse polarity......

The solution to the sock conundrum is to buy all the same socks. Although, I must confess that my original herd of 15 pairs of while socks as thinned considerably

This is why I only buy either left socks or right socks. None of them get lost in the washer or drier.
