OK I found this In a School yard a few Hours ago and It Frustrating The Heck out of me Chug!!! I Know that I finally Broke the 1900 time frame!!!!!


Red is searching on line for it!!!!

This was sitting face down with a light coating of mud on the back!!! I grabbed the Shank and Pulled it out of the Mud!!! I almost walked the 2 blocks home when I found it!!!!

My purpose in posting here at TreaureNet isn't to "rain on somebody's parade" -- but instead, to provide solidly-accurate identification of relics/objects ...which (I think) is what the finder would prefer to know.

Your button is definitely a US marine Corps button, not Navy. (The easy way to tell the difference is that the Marine Corps eagle's head dips way downward, instead of being upright as on the US Navy buttons.)

Your button is listed (and shown in a photo) as button MC14 in the Albert button-book. Because its face is "low-convex" (meaning, just a slight dome to it, but not actually flat), it dates from the 1890s at the earliest. It is not shown in the Tice button-book because that book covers only civil war and earlier buttons.

Although the photo from civilwarbuttons.com shows a civil war era US Marines button with a "Scovill Mfg. Co. / Waterbury" backmark, your button's Scovill backmark does not have the ring-of-dots, nor a "plain" ring encircling the button's loop. Therefore, your MC14 button dates anytime from the 1890s to well into the first half of the 20th-century.

You ruined it all! You meanie. Just kidding. Yes I agree its not CW era. I have WWI Great Seal buttons with this backmark lacking the "name in groove" or "ring of dots." Nice late 18oo's Marine button.
