could be a curtain rod hanger, the other end of the curtain rod that went into this device had a like device with an orifice that would have been open at the top so you could just drop the rod down into it. I also have seen towel racks that had similar ends.

I would say this is correct... only i am gonna say for a "shower rod".

I dont think the shower rod was a thing really before the days of electric pump driven water, and it does look old...

when I see these things( and I do find them too) I feel they are parts of old lamps, especially the two ports on the top remind me of whale oil lamps, although there were many designs etc , the age seems right

I Found something similar near an old fort in the Caribbean & it turned out to be a jacket Button from a soldiers coat / jacket around the 18th century

Good thinking, I find loads of oil lamp parts in fields, so makes sense.
